Access to vaccines for neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) remains limited in sub‑Saharan Africa (SSA), despite a high disease burden. The European African Vaccine Initiative (EAVI) is addressing this gap by generating locally relevant evidence and building sustainable capacity. As a proof of concept, we are evaluating a licensed chikungunya virus (CHIKV) vaccine—approved in the EU, Canada, the UK, and Brazil—in Kenya and Tanzania. The Phase IIIb study includes healthy adults and adults living with HIV, with rigorous safety and immunogenicity endpoints. In parallel, we will conduct advanced immune profiling, strengthen diagnostics, and implement a One Health framework that links human serosurveys with Aedes vector surveillance. Through technology transfer, training, and infrastructure support, EAVI aims to enable equitable access to CHIKV vaccines in SSA and provide a roadmap for future NTD vaccine trials.
